Favourite Diner Review ? Aug 29, 2012 This is definitely one of my very top favourite restaurants in all of Melbourne. I'm so sad they moved to Balaclava from Smith Street because we would eat there once or twice a fortnight and always bring friends around to try their awesome dishes like the cumin green beans. The chef and host are a great team who always look after us and my food intolerances. The chef always remembers that my order should be gluten free and offers new choices that I will be able to eat happily when I ask. One bonus to the restaurant move is that they now have GLUTEN FREE DUMPLINGS!!! Can you believe it? It's a first in my book, and they're just as delicious as everything! May 11, 2012 Very impressed, great atmosphere, very friendly effecient staff. We went with Danny's (owner) suggestion 'FEED US', which is the chef's choice. Entree consisted of mixed steamed dumplings served with a beautiful home made dipping sauce (no sign of the bottle of Soy Sauce). This was followed by 3 beautiful freshly cooked main courses, 1/2 serve Mongolian style Beef Scotch Fillet, 1/2 serve grilled chicken salad, full serve Grandma's Braised Pork Belly and steamed rice. Both the Pork and Beef were tasty, tender and melted in my mouth, with the freshest veges (NO frozen peas, carrots or corn) and tasty spices. No sign of MSG. The grilled chicken was served on the freshest salad. We didn't have room for dessert and left with full tummy's and a smile on our faces after paying the reasonable bill. We will be returning sooner rather than later and will be spreading the word about this fantastic restaurant to all our family and friends. Food was fresh and refreshingly different. Only minor criticism was that entrees such as spring rolls and dumplings came in 8 pieces and there were 5 of us having the 'feed us' banquet. We will definitely be back as food , service and atmosphere were of a high standard. 1 out of 1 found this review helpful 8 maamoul Diner from Melbourne Joined Nov 2010 perfect perfect perfect Favourite Diner Review ? My girlfriend and I drive from Hawthorn every second Friday to get a mouth full of these amazing flavours. I have to say that some of the negative comments made about this place are really rude. If you are looking for some of the things you mentioned then maybe you would be best to book a seat at a roof top restaurant in the CBD ask George from master chief if he can personally cook you a meal and have 2 waiters hovering over your table waiting for you to drop your napkin so they can tuck a new one back into your T shirt. This place welcomes everyone, and the owner has made a fantastic effort to make the customers feel comfortable, with organic free range chicken to die for and home made dumplings that will make u go back for seconds. Jul 30, 2012 The food is not stellar, but it's certainly good to very good depending on the dishes you order; we went for the banquet set meal on a quiet Monday evening and they went overboard to make sure that we got the dishes that we were most interested in. Whilst I don't expect they can do the same on really busy nights, it was a real pleasure to feel so looked after. The waitress and chef both went to some length to make sure that my partner's lactose intolerance was factored in too, which was great. Mar 15, 2012 We've eaten 3 times at Bamboo Room now.The first time was with a large group and we were delighted with the Feed Me option offered by our host. Each dish was a generous and fresh explosion of flavour. At the end of the meal we immediately booked a family birthday dinner to follow up and visited again tonight. In my opinion the most delicious dish on the menu is the green bean with roast almond. I think I would be in heaven with a serve to myself and a cold glass of something. But I couldn't leave out the treasures of the dumplings (succulent, sensational) the deep fried organic chicken (salty and addictive) the tempura vegetables (crisp, fresh and fabulous) tiger prawns in kong bao sauce (spicy, delectable) the fried tofu and crunchy rice cracker (yum). The service is a little patchy but friendly. Drinks and cutlery may be sporadically distributed but who cares when the food is so tasty and satisfying you want to lick the plate. I can understand why some other diners we met would cross town to eat here. Like other restaurants, our experience was better when we came for an early dinner (less patrons, more attentive service).First Review/First Visit: My husband and I typically favor Omakase at Japanese restaurants so thought why not give the "Feed Us" option a try. We let the chef choose our dinner for 35.00 pp. I saw a few items on the menu I would have ordered a la carte, but thought surprises from the kitchen would be fun. It was a great choice as the food was delicious and plenty. We had the following courses:1. 4 mini vegetarian fried spring rolls with a good side of tempura calamari2. An assortment of dimmies that included dumplings, xiao long bao, shao mai (well done, pastry was not too thick) -- all together I think we had at least 12 pieces. 3. 2 grilled chicken skewer (tasted of Indian spices but not to strong, well done, wasn't dry). 4. Aug 03, 2011 I keep going back to this place because it is the best 'bang for your buck' Chinese I have found in the inner north. The food is very high quality and there are some really interesting north Chinese and Szechuan dishes on the menu. Oh yes, and the dumplings are cheap, plentiful and very good quality. The Canadian/American/Aussie owner is hilarious but the sad fact is that many people don't get his skewed sense of humour and find him rude, and for that reason end up not liking the place. But, that's their loss I guess. I find him entertaining and incredibly funny, and its always good fun to watch him do the whole front of house himself, all the time maintaining his funny but surely demeanour, telling people to hurry up and order etc. 0 out of 1 found this review helpful 1 myrtle Diner from Melbourne Joined Jun 2011 de-licious Likes it Diner Review ? Apr 26, 2011 Being one who regularly shies away from Chinese food, I felt a little apprehensive about what this little hideaway in Collingwood had to offer. Without hesitation, I would come back here for more.I ordered the Szechuan beef, my friend ordered the pork belly and potato - as well as the rudimentary dumplings - which, as a previous reviewer pointed out - are amazing. The same could be said for the mains - both were fantastic, and not that shiny MSG-ridden fare that puts me off Chinese food usually. The spices were just right for the beef, and the pork belly also delectible, as were the melt-in-your-mouth potatoes. Cooked to perfection. I also found the little notebook at each table a nice touch to amuse ourselves whilst waiting (not very long, I might add) for our food. The wide selection of gluten free food and hospitable service was the best that we have enjoyed in many years. Furthermore, this was the first Chinese restaurant that we had come across that understood the requirements for ceoliac's.The northern style sweet and sour pork was thoroughly enjoyed along steamed dumplings, mixed vegetables and other selections.
