When I swapped vets two months ago, the vet spotted that my cat had a slight heart murmer. He explained that all that it means is that his heart is beating slightly out of rhythem. Heart murmers are graded on a scale of 1 to 8. As my cats heart murmer is a 1, it won't affect him at all. He doesn't require any medicine, and will be fine under anesthetic. The vet DID mention that heart murmers can become more severe as the cat ages, but this can be treated with medication and will not be a threat to his health so long as he is checked regularly by the vet.
