There was not one definitive answer to this question, however there were some facts that everyone could agree on:
a) in existing homes, if you choose a tankless heater, it is possible that you will need to upgrade systems and fixtures due to low flow issues;
b) gas tankless water heaters are preferred over electric powered units;
c) studies have shown that the best tankless water heaters are more efficient than the traditional tank heater, however, tankless might not be as cost effective in the long run, unless you are installing in new construction; your existing system and fixtures are sufficient; or you are willing to upgrade;
d) It is suggested that heat pump water heaters may be a worthwhile candidate.
In summary, there are pros and cons to all of the water heating technologies available today, (including air-source heat pumps, and geothermal heat pumps).
You need to determine which is best for your particular situation. If you decide to stay with tank water heaters, there is a lot you can and should be doing to maintain its efficiency, including insulating & flushing. |
