Doncaster Rail Study Released
20 March 2013
Manningham Council is pleased with an extension to the submission deadline for Doncaster Rail Study Phase 1 to Friday 14 June.
Manningham Mayor Cr Jennifer Yang said that given the extensive detail of the State Government funded study, Council believed the additional time was needed to properly digest and analyse the content and importantly consult with the community.
“We are very happy to see that the Study has finally been released, but at first glance, it offers up more questions than answers.”
“Council is surprised by the recommendations to terminate the rail line at the Doncaster Park and Ride and not to extend it to the Doncaster Hill activity centre or to take advantage of catchment zones and improved network operations that a Ringwood extension would provide.”
“Also, given previous estimates, we are shocked by the magnitude of the $11 billion price tag that has been attached to the project by the URS study, with the addition of the South Morang line deviation.”
“I am sure the findings will generate a very active discussion with the very people who are looking to the Doncaster Rail project to offer them solutions for better public transport into the future - our local community and those of our neighbouring municipalities.”
“Given the importance of this Study and its impact on public transport in the Doncaster corridor for decades to come, I hope the State Government will see fit to grant Council more time to undertake a comprehensive appraisal,” Cr Yang said.
