Good Duck at Good LuckUnassumingly tucked away on the busy Liverpool Road, this Beijingness restaurant was half full when we walked in on a Tuesday night. Diners chatting in an authentic Beijingness tone seemed to reassure the authenticity of its offerings. The menu read like a complete list of Beijingness food. Their specialty, as the huge picture on its exterior wall had promoted, is the Peking duck ($50). Either their ducks are so popular or so short-supplied, we were told to wait for an hour for the duck to be roasted. While waiting we learned that an order must be placed in advance if you come for the duck and, surprisingly, they do not serve take-aways, not even if you pay the same price and come to pick up yourselves. The owner, after whom the restaurant is named, is a friendly Beijingness and seemed to be quite proud of his ducks and went on to tell us that the peeling, an essential part of serving the duck, cannot be done well without months of practice.
