As a system administrator I think the most difficult and the most complicated is how to make a backup and DR plan for the whole system. Of coure except you have enough buget to buy hardware and software. In IT there is no problem about technology with enough money.
It seemed in here it was very popular to use VxVm(command begin with VX) or volume manager software (command begin with meta).
When we made this plan in China, I never did such thing in OS server, just use disk array with storage server, and in this server choose to use mirror, hot spare or something else and use fiber channel swith connect to differe server, each server normally connect to two fiber channel switch,for case one broken the server still can connect to disk array, in the disk array you can have different partition which maybe from one physical hard disk or different one, but for server it doesn't need care it just choose which partition it use to install OS or set for different application. If one disk get some problem just need do it in storage system not in the application server. Of course this cost lots of money.
But in here at moment I use one funny way to backup all the important data, we bough one backup software ARCServe (before I came) only just for Windows version(sounds crazy). I need backup all the data from all linux server to this Windows server with ARCServe software, but I cant use this software directly, I use backuppc+cygwin+rsync+cron finally get all the data to this server, then use ARCServer do some offsite backup. The company just want safety and stabilty without any cost, maybe they think I have magic power.
I don't have much knowledge in this area, if something wrong please let me know and I prepare myselt 100% to learn from you.
