Popular British car show Top Gear, known for its irreverence and over-the-top stunts, is coming to China—in Chinese.
Top Gear UK is already shown in China on Shanghai Dragon TV and the online television and movie portal iqiyi.com. Still, it’s not hugely popular among Chinese audiences, finding its appeal mainly among diehard car fans with an appreciation of British humor. But given that China has recently become the world’s largest market for cars, perhaps it’s not surprising that producers are betting that the audience for Top Gear will grow.
Still, producers say the Chinese version of the show will retain some of the key features of the U.K. original, which has also prompted spinoffs in the U.S. and elsewhere. Among those that will be maintained is popular “Star in a Reasonably Priced Car” segment in which the hosts roast a celebrity about his or her attempt to round the Top Gear racetrack, a two-mile long circuit that comes complete with “a raft of awkward corners” designed to make |
