4.8 Rule 189 – Double parking
Rule 189(1) prohibits a driver stopping on a road:
(a) if the road is a two-way road – between the centre of the road and another vehicle that
is parked at the side of the road; or
(b) if the road is a one-way road – between the far side of the road and another vehicle that
is parked at the side of the road.
The Rules intend that:
? for a two-way road – a driver must not park between a vehicle already stopped at the
left side of the road (direction of travel for the driver) and the centre of the road [defined in
the dictionary]
(see Figures 1 and 2); or
? for a one-way road – a driver must not park adjacent to a vehicle already parked on
either side of the road (a similar requirement to paragraph (a) but applying to either
side of the road (see Figures 3, 4, 5 and 6)). Australian Road Rules Amendments 2010 – Draft Regulatory Impact Statement Page 11
However, concern has been raised that paragraph (b) is unclear and may prevent drivers
