A man has drowned off the New South Wales Central Coast after jumping into the water to save his wife who had been knocked down by a large wave.
On Friday night a group of six people from Sydney were fishing off rocks at Wybung Head when a wave knocked one of them, a woman, into the water.
Two men aged in their 20s jumped into the water to save her.
The woman managed to get back to shore by herself when another wave carried her back, but the men did not resurface.
Detective Sergeant John Dooley said one of those men has been found dead.
"The first male was located floating face down in the water and we then conveyed that deceased person to land," he said.
His wife, the woman who was knocked into the water, was called to the scene to identify him.
Police say he was from China and had travelled to the area from Sydney for a fishing trip.
The search for the second man has been called off for the night and will resume on Sunday morning.
Police say the area around the rocks is dangerous and similar incidents have occurred in the area before.
