JASIM AL SAEDY thought of Sydney as a place of opportunity when he emigrated as a refugee from Iraq in 1999.
But after his shop was raided on Sunday night - the fourth time he has been robbed in the past year - he is now afraid to stay open after dark.
That is commonplace in the western Sydney suburb of Berala, which shop owners say becomes a "ghost town" at night due to a lack of police and fear of violent crime.
Mr Al Saedy's brother was looking after his convenience store at about 7pm on Sunday when five men pulled up in a red Toyota Camry.
They beat a man standing outside the store and then entered to take the cash register, cigarettes and phone cards worth more than $7000.
Down the road, Abdul Mayahi was confronted by a man carrying a machete just moments later.
Also from Iraq, he thought the man was joking when he demanded money. He has not seen any trouble at his convenience store since it opened 10 months ago.
He confronted the man out of instinct then dodged a swipe taken at his head with the machete, before punching the man in the face.
"He said 'give me the money or I'll kill you' and I said, 'OK' so I walked [towards him] and I gave him one," he said. "Then the other people come in with the gun.
"I went back behind the counter and bent down to pretend I would get them money. When I looked up they had already gone."
There are only a few shop owners in Berala that told the Herald they haven't been robbed in the past year. Lea Tu said her bakery was robbed by armed men last year and now shuts before 6pm.
The Civic video store on Woodburn road was badly damaged last September by bandits in a front-end loader who tried to ram-raid an ATM machine.
Figures released by the NSW Bureau of Statistics this month ranked the Auburn local government area, of which Belara is part, as the fourth worst neighbourhood in the state for robberies.
One worker, who wished only to be known as Michael, said many shop owners were fearful of staying open late."Once this place hits 6pm, there's not more than three business still open … if you're a troublemaker, you can do pretty much whatever you want," he said.
For Mr Al Saedy the situation at Berala might not be the Australia he once pictured, but he said he will not move.
"I have a contract, I can't move," he said. "I have had the business here for four years and I have no choice but to stay here." |
