It really depends on what kinds of rocks you want. You can have those volcanic rocks from ebay, they are quite cheap as long as you have a strong vehicle to carry them around. I picked up some about 50 of those rocks free from my neighbour, they are 200 meters from my place, beautiful rocks with irregular shapes, i was very happy with them, great for the garden, very heavy, could be used to stop the soil moving, but you have to use mortar to paste them together(I used concrete, but that doesn't look very nice, and am thinking of paste another layer of mortar to cover the concrete next year).
By the way, you have to prepare for yourself, i thought i am tough and strong enough, but, man, one rock weighs least 20kgs, and you do it for 50 rocks, it took me 20 more trips to carry them home with my wheelbarrow (we live in a little hillside), and i got them done in two mornings before work and two nights after work (note: these rocks are very popular with garden lovers, the same neighbour put 20 rocks in the nature strip before, and i just hesitated for 2 days because i was bit lazy, and guess what, they were gone when i was ready to get them). I need some more of these rocks to finish another small part of my front garden, but haven't found free ones around, also i don't have a ute of pick up truck, so i can not really buy them from ebay.
Go for the volcanic rocks, they look great, and make your garden so much different.
I got my garden done with those rocks in a month, hard work, i did it in summer, i just remembered that after this garden experience, i realised how important the sunscreen is in Australia. Everytime i saw my neighbours, or my neighbours saw me, they mention to me that my garden looks great.
