FRUSTRATED families say water leaking from Mitcham Reservoir is causing landslides and cracks in their homes.

The homeowners have threatened to launch legal action against Melbourne Water for compensation to recoup losses.
It is feared the removal of nearby cypress trees will create further havoc with nothing acting as a barrier to limit the water seepage.
Stan Archer said there was a constant eruption of water down the street but nothing had been done to fix the leak in 10 years.
“The cypress trees absorbed a lot of the water and we are concerned that without them there will be nothing halting the water flow,’’ he said.
Former resident Peter Glover, who sold up partly due to the leaking water, said he hired surveyors to investigate the soil.
“I took water samples and had them analysed and there was fluoride in the water,’’ he said.
“The clay expands when it gets wet and it’s clearly causing an uplift of the foundations and cracking the plaster in houses.’’
But Melbourne Water have hit back, saying the reservoir had shown no signs of leakage.
The authority’s civil assets manager Charmaine Quick said they had run tests in a bid to get to the root of the problem.
“Our investigations found that there was no indication that there was seepage from the reservoir and therefore it was unlikely that there was any impact on surrounding land,’’ she said.
Ms Quick said the cypress trees were cut down because of public safety and they would be replaced with three species of native plants.
