This is all just fluff and bluster. Flat, Unit, Apartment... they're all the same thing.
In the UK they traditionally called them flats, while in the USA they're known as Apartments.
In Australia we've traditionally used the term "flat" due to British English, but in recent times, the term Apartment is being used. I think the main reason for this is that it sounds a little more upmarket. (plus the fact that we're bombarded with American culture on TV)
The term "Unit" is a contraction of Home Unit. This term was introduced into Australia 50 or 60 years ago for exactly the same reason... R/E agents used it at the time, because it sounded more trendy and "up-market" than the word ‘flat’.
I 've seen some letter boxes in some units in Melbourne (if they are in Sydney, people would called them Villa) labeled as 'flat 1', 'flat 2', 'flat 3', etc. simply because they were built before1960s.
so, it is all about location, timing. |
