I'd suggest you use a small hand sanding block keep sanding a small area where the colors are different to check if it can eventually get even. This will give you an idea how much effort you will need.
You will likely need an edger again once the main part in the center is done. It depends on how deep the main part is done. User your finger to check. You can edge sanding with 150 grid again around. Alternatively you can buy an orbital finish sander to do this fine sanding if the room is not big and the depth difference is not outstanding. An orbital finish sander can use much finer sanding papers to make the whole work shining. You will use it to fine sand the small areas where you need to re-apply the filler and light sand between the coating process. You can get 180/240/300 grit papers for painting.
Don't rush to painting step. Get the whole floor sanded/filled as smooth as possible, especially when you want to apply a clear high glossy paint. Keep a small electric sander handy will give you more flexibility.
Rent the drum sander first. Then rent the edger. Buy several sanding papers for replacement. You can always return the unused.
