我自己感觉是你有没有兴趣做，我也是很不喜欢编程，一直是弱项，但我很喜欢trouble-shooting的感觉，有点像破案。10年it行业做过管理，也做过硬件，软件测试，最终我还是努力转向了IT admin. 不过薪酬确实不如做软件，做unix系统管理的能拿的高些，ms要低些，基础support最低，但是是打基础的。没有对xp的充分运用，比如, remote assistance, l2tp, 等等，甚至outlook的应用，trouble-shooting，你没法一步就学会，AD, exchange. for unix, 到是可以比较直接介入server管理，unix都提供的是后台服务，不过unix的shell program就比较重要了，不过个人感觉，unix比ms还是透明一些，来龙去脉更清楚一些，ms经常靠莫名其妙的重启来解决问题。而且有一件事情，你要弄清楚，这个行业的分支太多，你不可能样样精通，要专注一个方向，对其他有一定了解就好。选一个生命力强的，市场有流行，自己又喜欢的作为主攻。

Unix is a bit dead end nowadays though...More and more people has converted to the Linux side of the force...
I agree that by average, Microsoft Sys admins are paid less, because there are too many people doing it. However individual cases can be completely different from the general trend...so after all, what interests you most is still the most important factor. If you do something really really well, chances are that you'll get paid big bucks.

I am IT admin now (I should be  completely unix admin, because I am so farmiliar with  Solaris and Aix). But in fact 50% of my job about helpdesk support and in our company we have all kinds of server (hp, solaris, aix, digital, windows). But most of the application in linux server (all kinds of linux server, redhat , ubuntu, debian).  Because we are software company and need all kinds of platfrom to test.
I need to support database ( SQL, mysql , oracle) all the application server and all the backup  server and firewall. In our company everthing even a little thing if has some relationship with PC that should be my duty. If something broken (less than $1000) I need  go out to buy by myself. This really the “big advantage” of a small company (our company just more than 50 and less than 60 people ).
And if you are femail try not to go this way because sometimes you need to move some equipment ( wish everything in computer network because small and samll, so it will easy for me to pick up) and sometime you need to climb up or down to  plug or unplug cable, in summer I even can't wear my lovely long shirts.

What I want to say is: skirt is a no-no for sysadmin. Wear trousers all the time. And, yes, girls are a bit disadvantaged because we have to carrie heavy stuff sometimes. Get a trolley or something. This morning I was carrying a laser printer up/down stairs and trying to open doors with one finger. It's not going to work for girls. OH&S...
