Arsene Wenger splashed some of the £80m at his disposal, completing a hat-trick of signings - Per Mertesacker, Park Chu-young and Andre Santos. He is now expected to follow up his interest in Everton's Mikel Arteta and Lille's Eden Hazard.
Newcastle also joined the spending spree, securing Inter Milan defender Davide Santon and looked set for a second bid for Freiburg striker Papiss Demba Cisse after their £10m offer was rejected.
Bolton defender Cahill, 25, who has a £17m release clause written into his contract, was the subject of a firm bid from Tottenham and in another twist Joe Cole, 29, held talks with Lille over a loan move from Liverpool .
Fulham also agreed a £10.6m fee with FC Twente for winger Bryan Ruiz, 26, but the deal has not been completed.
On Tuesday night it was unclear if Bolton had accepted Tottenham's offer for Cahill - but it is understood a bid of nearer to £12m would be enough.
Sunderland boss Steve Bruce is still short of Tottenham's asking price of £12m for Crouch, 30, but a swap deal involving Asamoah Gyan, 25, who cost £13m, cannot be ruled out.
Chelsea 's Yossi Benayoun, 31, was reportedly given permission to leave Israel's training camp on Tuesday to return to England to undergo a medical at Spurs.
Chelsea were said to be considering a swoop for 17-year-old Everton sensation Ross Barkley, while the Stamford Bridge club also still hope to land Luka Modric, 25.
Wilson Palacios, 27, will be confirmed as a Stoke player, while Crouch and Jermaine Jenas could leave.
Heurelho Gomes, 30, is in talks with CSKA Moscow over a loan and Aston Villa have bid £4m for Middlesbrough defender Rhys Williams, 23. |
