A ship was twice as old as its boiler was when the ship was as old as the boiler is. The sum of te ages equals 49 years. How old is the ship and how old is the boiler?
what is the answer? :)

x+y=49

i'm ten yrs old and i've got the right answer with a little, tiny bit of dad's help:
ship now = a              1.  a-b = c-d                5.  2xd-b=c-d                 9.  3xd=2xb           
ship then = b              2.  a = 2xd                   6.   2xd-b=b-d                10. d+b=49-d
boiler now = c             3.  a+c = 49                7.  2xd+b=49                11.b=49-2d
boiler then = d            4.  b = c                        8.   3xd-b=b               12. 3d=2x(49-2d)
                                       13. d=98-6d              14. 98=7d so d=14. then 14x2=28.
                                        49-28=21  so its    28 and 21
