Compassionate Leave
Compassionate leave is designed to provide a short period of paid leave on compassionate grounds especially when a worker suffers the loss of a near relative.
In some instances leave is extended to cover the care of a near relative suffering a serious or incapacitating illness.
Compassionate leave is sometimes referred to as ‘bereavement leave’. The latter however, refers strictly to the death of a close relative.
What are the Standard Compassionate Leave Entitlements?
The standard award entitlement used to be 2 days compassionate leave.
Today over half of all awards now provide for 3 days compassionate leave and, numerous agreements also entitle workers to 3 rather than 2 days compassionate leave.
According to the Philip Morris Ltd Operations Agreement 1998 employees are entitled to leave with pay up to one working week for 12 hour shift employees or 4 days for 8 hour shift employees.
A number of agreements such as the Technical Salaried Staff Qantas Airways Limited) Enterprise Agreement 1998 provide 3 days leave for bereavement leave purposes when an immediate family member dies and, and one day’s leave in the event of the death of other close relatives of the employee.
