U-16 National Football Team’s ace player Lee Seung-woo(FC Barcelona Juvenil A) completely proved that why many people call him as a ‘the second Messie.’ Due to the Lee Seung-woo’s one-man show of scoring two goals alone, South Korea beat old rival Japan and qualified for the FIFA U-17 World Cup first time in recent 6 years.
Korea defeated Japan 2-0 with Lee Seung-woo’s two goals in the 41st and 47th at the quarterfinal match of 2014 AFC U-16 Championship which was held at the Thailand Bangkok Rajamangala Stadium on 14(Korean time). Korea advanced to the quarterfinal on the base of winning whole of the 3 group matches. Korea advanced to the semifinal through beating Japan easily and qualified for the U-17 World Cup which is given to the 4 top teams. The advancement of U-17 World Cup is for the first time in six years since 2009 Nigeria World Cup. Whereas Song Heung-min took active role under the Coach Lee Kwang-jong in the 2009 World Cup, the Barcelona duo Lee Seung-woo and Jang Gyeol-hee(Cadete B) will show their ability to the world under the Coach Choi Jin-cheul on the next year’s competition.
As reflecting many interests toward Korean Japanese match, overseas Koreans and Japanese cheered players enthusiastically with Korean flags and Japanese flags in the stadium. Before the match, Lee Seung-woo put the Japanese soccer fans in a bad mood by saying “If we play that we can do, we can easily beat Japan.” However, Lee Seung-woo proved his confidence with his ability.
Korea was deprived of the initiative by Japan and was taken to Japan at the first half. Japan cut off Korea’s passing by speedy pressing and strong physical fight. While Korea couldn’t make solid chance, Japan threatened Korea’s goal net with their unique pass play. If this has continued, Korea could be defeated by Japan and failed to get U-17 World Cup advancement qualifying.
In this time, Lee Seung-woo extricated team from a corner. Lee Seung-woo made first goal by connecting Kim Jung-min (Sincheon middle school)’s cross from the left side of the box to the right-feet shooting in the 41st. Throughout the first half, Lee Seung-woo tried to make chance alone and was blocked by Japan’s defenders. However, he showed wise play such as using peer players and pull Japan down at a single cast. The only middle school player of the national team, Kim Jung-min, pull the opponent defender down with his foot skill and gave the perfect goal chance to Lee Seung-woo. Coach Choi Jin-cheul put Kim Jung-min who has spirit and skill in spite of his age as starting member from the group matches. Kim Jung-min has showed performances that fulfill a Coach Choi’s expectations.
Lee Seung-woo’s additional goal at the second half reminded of Lionel Messie. He dribbled the ball towards the goal with speed without delay when he had seen Japan defenders raise their line. Japan defenders couldn’t catch up Lee Seung-woo’s speed. Lee Seung-woo ran about 50 meters with 3 defenders and easily bore on goalkeeper. He finally pushed the ball into the goal post with his left feet. Lee Seung-woo rejoiced over his additional goal as spreading ceremony that put his ear to stand.
Japan was not an easy opponent, though. Japan vigorously attacked Korea when we were off guard with score of 2-0. However, Korea defenders blocked Japan’s attacking with every fiber of their body. Korean defenders has played three matches in a row without losing a point since the first group match with Oman(3-1,win). Although Japan lost the match, they brightened their future by showing steady pass play and equable performances of 23 players.
Lee Seung-woo missed the chance of hat trick since his shooting hit Japan’s defender and escaped goal post at the last moment of second half.
