Why are both my local council and Sydney Water charging me for stormwater services?
Sydney Water works with councils and other agencies to manage the stormwater system in Sydney. Most stormwater channels and drains are the direct responsibility of local councils, however Sydney Water owns, operates and maintains a stormwater drainage system servicing certain areas. Sydney Water recovers the cost to maintain this infrastructure through charges approved by the Independent Pricing & Regulatory Tribunal (IPART).
To find out if your property is in a Sydney Water stormwater catchment area, check our stormwater network map.
If your property is in a Sydney Water stormwater catchment area (excluding the Rouse Hill area), your bill includes a stormwater drainage area charge. The charge is currently $12.27 a quarter for residential properties. This charge contributes to maintenance of Sydney Water's stormwater pipes and channels.
If you own a residential property in the Rouse Hill area, your quarterly stormwater service charge is $32.66 (as of 1 July, 2012).
Your local council may charge you for 'local stormwater projects' that are not related to Sydney Water's stormwater mains. To find out more about these charges, or stormwater projects in your area, please contact your local council directly.
